Let me just say that I am NOT okay with Christmas in a secular school. Let me say that hearing Santa talked about like a real person makes me seriously uncomfortable. Let me say that the only classroom I DO feel comfortable in right now is the infant room, where everybody just sleeps and poops through the holiday season in which I have no holidays. Let me say that there is more than enough thematic artwork having to do with winter to make resorting to Christmas paraphenalia unnecessary. Let me say that the Hanukkah/Kwanzaa tokenism doesn't help, because nobody puts anything resembling real enthusiasm or knowledge into it. Let me say that teachers complaining about not being "allowed" to focus on Christmas as much as they like puts me off. Let me say that campy kids Christmas music sucks. I'm trying to be respectful. I know that most people at this school celebrate Christmas. I know that most kids here love Christmas. But just because you love something, doesn't mean you have to do it at school! Spend some time with your family for your holidays. The thing I've discovered is that I wouldn't feel comfortable having my own child in this school, the way it is now (not just Santa related, but a number of things that have been bugging me lately about how many of the other teachers do things). And that really makes me sad.
