The video meme... · 10/31/2009
...oh don't run away! You can learn a lot of interesting things about a person if you know what they like to watch for entertainment! sine_que_non767 tagged me for the video meme, but I'm afraid it's going to be lame, lame, lame. Much like my taste in fic/fanfic, my taste in video runs to humor, romance and happy endings. (I really--probably pathologically--avoid entertainment that makes me feel sad or depressed.)1. Total number of films I own on DVD/video:Between 60 and 100, give or take all of the home recordings. (Blows a kiss to imkalena from whom I got my Sentinel tapes, and dgcandace who sent me Herc, Xena, Fantasy Island and [be still my little black heart] Young Herc in eyeliner.)2. The last film I bought:Black Beauty. It was dirt cheap in my Avon Lady's catalogue, and, hey, you know, David Thewlis. And pretty horses. I haven't watched it though, because I heard it was sad. (God knows the book was sad!) *hangs head* 3. The last film I watched:Dave4. Five films that I watch a lot or that mean a lot to me:Moonstruck - I love this movie so much I just can't tell you. Opera--*Puccini Opera!* Cher. Love, romance, witty dialogue. I always say this is my all time favorite movie, which I know is lame when compared to revered cinematic epics such as Lawrence of Arabia, or the LOTR movies, or Citizen Kane. But I warned you this would be lame. :-)Dave - I used to be addicted to the Sunday morning political shows, and seeing all of those "serious" people--politicians, reporters, generic talking heads--all willing to subtly make fun of themselves, is both hilarious and heartwarming. And the plot itself is clever and fun. And, you know, Charles Grodin.Sense and Sensibility - I swear I have every bit of dialogue in this movie memorized by heart. It's just... I don't know why, but I love it.Galaxy Quest - There are so many things I love about this movie, but I think what keeps me coming back again and again is the constant blending of reality and fantasy/fandom, which maybe just appeals to me as a fan. (Absolute favorite lines: Guy: "I'm just jazzed about bein' on the show, man!"; Gwen: "Let's get out of here before one of those things kills Guy!")Aside from my freaky life: My daughter and I were watching the trailer for Hitchhiker's Guide. I say, "Who *is* that blond guy? I know him from *somewhere*!" and C replies: "Let's get out of here before one of those things kills Guy!" me: "Yes!!"The Due South pilot - This is another one with too many memorable moments to count. I love Fraser's combination of competence, naivete and steely determination. I think the the series sometimes had a tendency to make him into a bit of a caricature, but the pilot manages to rein in the over-the-top aspects of the character and make him very sympathetic. It doesn't quite have a happy ending, but it's hopeful (particularly in light of what I know comes after), and I think for Fraser, the satisfaction of justice is more important than his own situation. Honorable mention goes to How the Grinch Stole Christmas, since it gets watched (repeatedly) every holiday season, come hell or high water.4a. Five episodes from TV shows that I watch a lot or that mean a lot to me:I don't have many TV shows recorded so the selection is kind of limited there...The episode of Absolutely Fabulous where they all go to Morocco and Patsy sells Saffy into white slavery. (I don't own it, but I've seen it several times thanks to Comedy Central.)The first appearance of Creegan on Cleopatra 2525, mainly for the scene where he sees Hel and says (in one of the sexiest voices I've ever heard in my life), "Helen."Any episode of the new (and sadly short-lived) Fantasy Island because, you know, Malcolm McDowell. And Madchen Amick. But mostly Malcolm McDowell. The aforementioned episode of Young Hercules where Herc meets his evil twin. Because, you know, Ryan Gosling in eyeliner is hotter than a very, very hot thing. Who knew?Any episode of As Time Goes By, the British comedy with Judi Dench and Geoffrey Palmer (which I *sincerely* hope is available on DVD, since I really, really want to buy it). I love this series because it's funny, but in an understated way, and it tends to turn the typical 'married couple at loggerheads' comedy formula on its head, and it shows (or seems to show) a realistic vision of happy marriage, which thrills me down to my romantic little toes.5. Which five people am I passing the baton onto? And why?I bet all the people I'm thinking of have probably done it already, but I've been away from LJ for so long I don't know! (If you have done it, please let me know and I will shamefully slink over to your LJ to read.)laurelwood - Because I think we have a lot in common, and because your posts are a delight and I'm curious as to what you like to watch.nut_shell - Much the same as what I said above about Laurelwood -- I always enjoy the intelligence and humor in your posts and I'm curious. dgcandace - To get more of a fix on what you're up to these days.prillalar - Because you're so uber-cool, and yet so nice.louiselux - I know this'll sound crazy, but I'm so intrigued by your color style philosophy that I'm now curious about what you like to watch. (And I'm wholeheartedly embracing the idea of colorful shoes--in fact, I already have a pair of flat, ballet-ish dark red pumps that I'll wear on the flimsiest of excuses. e.g. Dark pink shirt and khaki trousers? Why, red shoes would go perfectly with that! And apparently I'm brazen enough to carry it off, since I got compliments on that very combo, and if people are laughing at me, they're doing it well out of earshot.)
