Climb Against the Odds - Mt. Shasta

by Anne Wood

In July 2007, several women friends from my work (Mountain Travel Sobek) will join a team of breast cancer survivors and others whose lives have been affected by the disease in 'Climb Against the Odds ~ Mt. Shasta,' the 8th major mountain climbing expedition hosted by the Breast Cancer Fund. Our inspirational team will strive to raise $500,000 for breast cancer prevention initiatives, will work tirelessly to increase awareness of the harmful health effects caused by environmental toxins, and will express the strength and courage we found in challenging ourselves to climb to the top of a 14,162' dormant volcano in Northern California.

This will be my first technical climb. I don't know what I look forward to most - hopefully reaching my goal and making it to the summit, or the 6 months of training it will take to get there. Between now and then, I will walk, hike, and run with 14 of the coolest women I have had the pleasure to work with, under the leadership of Cathy Ann Taylor, MTS Guide for the Himalayas. Only about 5 of us plan to climb Shasta, while the rest will participate in training hikes along the way to help raise funds, keep us motivated, and have fun!

If you would like to support our Climb Against the Odds, you can contribute by visiting:

Cathy Ann is our guide, and in return for her volunteer leadership, we are pooling donations for the Breast Cancer Fund in her name, so that she (and we) can reach her fundraising goal by July 2007.

Any contribution, big or small, is appreciated. If you can not give, you are invited to follow our progress by visiting this site whenever you like, and (if I am successful at keeping it current) watching our progress.

Thank you!
